Lesson learnt from our Fall Club Contest at Toastmaster today.
'Never go for a win, go for full participation and the win follows along.'
I must admit I have been to contests before and my sole purpose was to win. Don't get me wrong winning is great but when we make it the focus, the destination; we kind of lose the value of the journey, the full participation. At those contests I just referred to, I was more nervous than relaxed. Which chips away the energy of my presentation on its own.
Today, I just had fun evaluating an interesting speech, pointed out the highlights and gave my suggestion for improvement and boom. I was fulfilled with my presentation (though I thought the other guy did very well) and the win was totally a bonus.
